Expressing Purpose- Unit 3 (Ticket to English)


EXPRESSING PURPOSE

I. Expressing purpose comes as a response to the following question :
WHY ........................... ?

e.g :                        Q : why do you practise sport ?
                               A : I practice sport because I want to keep fit.

This answer can be expressed in different ways, here are the most common ones:
I practise sport to/so as to/ in order to keep fit.
I practise sport for keeping fit
I practise sport for fitness
I practise sport in order that / so that I can/ will / could /would keep fit
I practise sport for the purpose of / with the aim of / with the objective
of / with the intention of keeping fit .

II. Sometimes we do something because we don’t want something else to happen, in this case we use :

In order not to / so as not to / in order that ....+ modal+ not

e.g :
He speaks silently .He doesn’t want to disturb his neighbors
  He speaks silently so as not to / in order not to disturb his neighbors
He speaks silently so that / in order that he wouldn’t perturbe neighbors.

Examples:
-We had a meeting today so as to discuss next year's programme.
-She did all she could for her not to worry.
-I moved to France so that I could improve my French.
-Everyone did their best in order to finish the work.
