Expressing Cause and Effect-Lesson





What is a cause?
Cause is why something happened. The cause is the first thing that happens. It comes after the word because.

Examples:
  1. More hours studied will cause your marks to increase
  2. I stayed home from school because I had the flu.
  3. My heart rate increases due to physical activity.
  4. One cause of underdevelopment is illiteracy.

What is an Effect? 
The effect is the second thing that happens. The effect answers the questions:
What happened?           --------       What was the result?
Examples:
  1. Abby was going to fast, as a result, she fell off her bike.
  2. When water is heated, the molecules move quickly, therefore the water boils.

Clue words for CAUSE and EFFECT:

Since
Due to
Due to the fact that...
Therefore
Hence
So
Thus
Consequently
As a result
In order to/ In order that

Such .... that


EXERCISE:

Read these sentences and identify the cause and effect. 


What is the cause?

We had a party because we won the game.
Since I studied at home, I passed the test.
What is the effect?

It rained all day so they canceled the picnic.
I woke up late, therefore I missed the bus.
